Stage 14 - Devizes White Horse to Cherhill Monument

4.7 miles

The route is mainly along the White Horse Trail and Quakers' Walk

Route - (Select Satellite view) - See this stage as a virtual run

Start at Roundway Hill - SU 014 641

There is a Parking Place here, at the top of the Hill.

Run along the pathway. Soon the track bears slightly left.

After just over a mile from the start of this leg, there is a path which crosses this track. This is the Wessex Ridgeway, although it is no longer sign posted. Do not continue straight on but turn right here.

If you were to continue along this track you would soon reach the North Wilts Golf Club. You would have gone wrong - GO BACK!

Follow the path between the fields (with pigs on the left) until you come to the road. This is the Wansdyke Path. There should be a Marshal here to direct you across the road. Continue along this pathway, keeping to the right hand track. Soon you will reach some trees/bushes. Keep straight on between several more fields.

When you come to a gate on the left hand side, with a gap for pedestrians, turn left.

There used to be five white pyramid shaped bollards here (shown by a red arrow on the Google map and still visible on the google map at high magnification), but these have been replaced by the gate. You are no more than 150 metres from the A361 at this point.

Continue along the path at the edge of this field (going away from the A361 and towards the monument), passing a mass of trees on the left (shown by a yellow arrow on the Google map).

At the end of the trees you will see a signpost showing 'Byway' in three different directions. Continue straight ahead towards the monument where you once again join the White Horse Trail and the Wessex Ridgeway. You will start to climb and come to a gate. After the gate turn left and follow the grassy track to the monument. The finish is at the monument.

The White Horse is visible a bit further to your right.

If you have problems parking near the finish of this stage, it is suggested that you park your car in Yatesbury Lane whilst you wait for your colleague who is running.

To get to The White Horse Inn, our Headquarters for the afternoon, walk down to the A4, drive to the turning for Cherhill, that is turn left on the A4, turn right up Marsh Lane (see Map) and continue for 2½ miles to Compton Bassett.

The Cherhill White Horse is: Ordnance Survey reference SU 049 696.
